Filter

Filters are simple but powerful DJ effects that let you remove or emphasize parts of a track’s sound, making it easier to blend tracks smoothly and control energy during transitions. Using them cuts out large bands of frequencies. You may have heard of a low pass or high pass filter. There are different types of filters in Traktor:

  • Filter: a standard filter with 2-knob and single knob control modes
  • Filter LFO: a classic filter with tempo-synced LFO, which is either driven by the Beatgrid (and therefore is always in sync with the track) or can be run in Freerun mode
  • Filter Pulse: innovative, auto-controlled Filter effects that are triggered by signal peaks in the music, producing interesting lashing sounds
  • 92 LFO: modeled after Allen & Heath’s Xone:92 mixer with tempo-synced LFO
  • 92 Pulse: an innovative, auto-controlled Filter effect modeled after the filters on Allen & Heath’s Xone:92 mixer, which is triggered by signal peaks in the music, and is capable of producing interesting lashing sounds

When to use them:During transitions, high-pass filter the incoming track to remove bass. Slowly open the filter on the new track while closing it on the outgoing track to achieve a seamless blend.

EQ

EQ is one of the most important tools for DJ transitions, even though it’s often overlooked compared to flashier effects like delay or reverb. The EQ bands control the balance of frequencies in a track and include high, mid, and low frequency sections.

When to use it: EQ is essential during every transition. A common technique is to reduce or fully cut the low frequencies on the incoming track while it’s being mixed in, then gradually bring the bass back as the outgoing track is removed. The mid and high bands can be used to tame vocals, soften aggressive synths, or help two tracks sit together more cleanly in the mix.

Used carefully, EQ allows you to blend tracks smoothly without clashing basslines or overcrowded mids. It’s arguably the best DJ tool for clean, professional-sounding transitions and works alongside effects like filters and delay.
